Our coir and coco peat products are,
Coir fibre and coir fibre pith (coco peat) is extracted from the fibrous mesocarp (middle layer) of the coconut. An abundant crop of coconuts (approximately 2.6 billion nuts per year) available in the coconut triangle in Sri Lanka, form the base for these two excellent products.
Coir fibre and coir fibre pith (coco peat) are extracted by soaking whole husks in water for about 4-6 weeks. A bacterial reaction takes place in the soaking pit to facilitate the loosening of Coir fibre and coir fibre pith (coco peat).
The traditional processing method which is unique to Sri Lanka produces the two categories of coir fibre (known as “Bristle Fibre” and “Mattress Fibre”) and Coir Fibre Pith (Coco Peat). Bristle fibre is longer and stronger than mattress fibre which is shorter and softer. Bristle fibre is available in two basic grades namely 1-tie and Omatt due to slight differences in the production process.
The modern processing method which is known as defibrering / decortication produces one category of fibre known as Mixed Fibre and Coir Fibre Pith (Coco Peat). Mixed fibre is a mix of bristle fibre and mattress fibre.
